Copper Sulfate and Liquid Shock: A Simpler Pool

Most pool advice starts and ends with chlorine. Floats, tabs, salt generators, weekly shock — all of it assumes you are maintaining a free-chlorine residual as the primary line of defense. That works, but it is also a lot to manage.

I have been running a simpler system: granular copper sulfate as a continuous algicide, and liquid shock on demand as an oxidizer and clarifier. Friends started asking questions, so I turned my notes and old spreadsheet into a proper reference page.

The chemistry is straightforward. Dissolved copper ions (Cu²⁺) disrupt algae cell membranes and enzyme systems at very low concentrations — 0.3 ppm is roughly 0.3 milligrams of copper per liter of water. That residual does not degrade in sunlight the way chlorine does, so a single dose lasts weeks rather than days. Liquid shock handles the oxidation side: body oils, sunscreen, organic debris — the stuff that clouds the water over time.

The same ion is produced by expensive electrolytic ionizers. Granular copper sulfate skips the hardware and just delivers it directly. The math is not complicated once you know the molecular weights involved, but it is easy to get wrong, so I built a calculator into the page.
