Mike (the nephew) passed his instrument check ride with the same durable FAA examiner. It took just over a year of "off and on again" training, but we got it done. Mike is already talking about getting the "high performance" (greater than 200 horsepower) and "complex" (retractable gear, variable pitch prop, and flaps) endorsements. I think he has his eye on my 210!
